About the event
I am pleased to announce that UQC will be hosting a novice invitational tournament for schools in Central America, the Caribbean, and countries bordering the Caribbean Sea. The tournament will be called “Caribbean Novice” as shorthand.
The tournament will take place online over Zoom and buzzin.live on Saturday, November 4, 2023. The questions used will be the Internationalized Version of this question set.
Schedule Outline
-There will be an opening meeting at 9:45 AM Central Daylight Time, and games will begin at 10 AM Central.
-Depending on the final field size, all teams will be guaranteed at least six games.
-There will be a 30-minute lunch break after the end of Round 3, starting at approximately 11:45 AM Central.
-The estimated end time of the tournament is 2:30 PM Central.
Registration
Teams should register to play this tournament at the bottom of this page. Schools may register up to a maximum of four teams.
The deadline to register is Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Teams are only permitted to drop from the field prior to the registration deadline.
Fees
No fees. This tournament is free to all teams.
Cameras
There are two different procedures for camera requirements depending on the following situations.
If all of a team’s active players are in the same in-person location, and an adult teacher, coach, or chaperone is present, teams must have one camera on which shows all members of the team.
If members of the team are not playing from the same in-person location (for example, if players join Zoom from their own homes), each of those players must also hold one hand in view of the camera during gameplay.
Camera exemptions may be permitted if the Internet is unstable. It is highly recommended that players with unstable Internet connections inquire as to whether their team can meet in-person in one location, such as a school classroom.
Rules
This tournament will use the NAQT ruleset, with the following clarifications.
-A team may consist of up to six players, with up to four playing at any one time.
-If a school brings more than one team, players may not switch between different teams from that school during the tournament. For example, a player on the “A” team may not play for the “B” team later in the tournament.
-Substitutions are permitted during timeouts or at halftime.
-Games at this tournament are not timed. There is no clock. All games will consist of 20 tossup-bonus cycles.
Ages
This is a high school tournament, intended primarily for students in the equivalents of American grades 9-12 (years 10-13 in the United Kingdom). Players in the equivalents of American grades 7 and 8 may be welcome to “play up”—contact me with any specific requests.
